Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, who gave us Marvel’s milestone story arc “Civil War” have now collaborated on telling what may be the best Wolverine story arc ever: “Old Man Logan”.

Millar compares this to Frank Miller’s “Dark Knight Returns” which is a story set in Batman’s future and has defined the grim and gritty persona that is now associated with Batman. The similarity between “Dark Knight Returns” and “Old Man Logan” is that they are both set in the possible future of the characters, and we are left to wonder why Wolverine, the most fierce mutant of all, has abandoned his instincts to become a simple farmer.

As far as story telling goes, Millar is one of my favorite writers, although his history of writing epic stories isn’t very consistent. I wasn’t too happy with how Civil War ended though I did love the build up and the plot twists. I have the same outlook on the recent “Secret Invasion” (written by Brian Micheal Bendis) that, although ended with a bang, somehow felt lacking (probably because it lead straight to Dark Reign and thus seemed to lack a clear ending). However, I also understand that the writers have to answer to the editors and the marketing machine that is Marvel, which may or may not affect the intention they had for the stories.

However, Millar’s work on “Old Man Logan” seems promising. Issue number 70 where Logan reveals to Clint Barton (Hawkeye) why he hasn’t popped his claws in over 50 years in a vow of pacifism is one of the most memorable and emotionally charged stories I’ve read recently. I just hope that the whole story doesn’t end up lacking as some of the previous Marvel stories have been guilty of (with the notable exception of X-Men: Messiah Complex - that was pure awesome).

While I’ve been a huge fan of Steve McNiven’s artwork back when he was with CrossGen and working on Meridian, his artwork for “Old Man Logan” is simply acceptable. Good stuff but nothing over-the-top awesome yet. His command of cinematic panels and realistic expressions is as reliable as ever.

I definitely hope that “Old Man Logan” delivers a satisfying story ending that it deserves. So far, it’s been an incredible adventure.

We were both thrilled with the results. ^.^
